Ep.8 - The Spanish Video
Working Title: How I Got Fluent in Spanish in 32 Days!
Hey everyone,
Spoiler alert, I'm a new father!
Well not really, I did this challenge a while ago but this is the first time I've made that news public for my general audience (sorry ladies).
Anyway, English is my primary language now but it's also my second language.
I was even in ESOL in elementary school and I got made fun of for my Asian accent even until early middle school.
I still remember listening to and trying to recite rap lyrics to try and sound more "normal". Even though I had a really tough time as a kid learning English I'm really glad I learned Korean first.
It's kept me close to my extended family, especially my grandmother who raised me and my sisters for much of my life after my mother passed away when I was 7.
During my digital nomad stint, I spent 6 months in Korea, I was able to experience the culture there and connect with my heritage because I'm still fluent in Korean. I even made some local friends there.
I want to provide the same experience for my daughter and give her the gift of being able to speak her mother's native tongue, Spanish.
My wife is Colombian and even though I've tried learning Spanish in the past it was never a priority (she speaks fluent English) so I just kept trying and failing.
I was even a bit embarrassed about it because once someone would find out that I even lived in Spain and Colombia they'd (wrongfully) assume that I spoke Spanish.
Enter BaseLang, ever since the success of the channel I've been getting a lot of sponsorship opportunities, however, I told myself that I wouldn't even consider it unless I've personally used the product (and liked it).
Not only do I think BaseLang is the greatest Spanish learning resource out there, but I know the founder, Connor, personally.
He happens to be a passionate language learner himself, but, most importantly, I know how much dedication he's put into building BaseLang.
As I used BaseLang, I became close to many of the tutors since I spoke to them for hours on end. They've told me about the tremendous amount of difference working for BaseLang has done for their lives and they're happy it exists and that they get to be a part of it.
I worked my tail off to learn Spanish because it's something I've always wanted to do and now had a chance to do it for monetary gain (I kid).
Since the challenge, I've gotten multiple positive comments about my Spanish.
If you're a lover of learning new things like languages, give this video a watch and let me know what you think!
As always, PLEASE leave me any questions in the comments section.
Much love,
Tim Kim
